Driving my car

My name is Marissa, and this morning I was driving (eu estava dirigindo) at about 120 kilometers per hour (km/h) – I was really late for a meeting with a client.
A police officer waved at me (um policial me fez sinal) to stop the car (parar o carro). I slowed down (diminuí a velocidade) and pulled over (encostei o carro) of course, and then… I got a ticket (uma multa), since the speed limit (limite de velocidade) was 80 km/hour.
At this point, I knew I was going to be late for the meeting. What’s worse (o que é/era pior), I couldn’t find a parking spot (lugar para estacionar) when I got there.
I drove around the block (dei a volta no quarteirão) looking for a parking lot (um estacionamento). I was so nervous that I almost hit a truck (quase bati em um caminhão)!
I finally found a great parking space (lugar para estacionar) near the office. Things were finally looking up (as coisas finalmente estavam melhorando)!

I AM JACK
My name is Jack and I’m a college student. I don’t get much sleep on school days because I have so much to do. Usually when I go to bed I fall asleep very quickly, except when I’m worried about an exam or an assignment. I’m a heavy sleeper, which is a good thing because my neighborhood is kinda noisy. My roommate, on the other hand, is a light sleeper.
Whenever I use an alarm clock, I have to put it far away from my bed otherwise I’ll just turn it off and go back to sleep. But even when I oversleep I’m usually able to make it to class on time.
I rarely take naps during the day. Sometimes it is really hard to stay awake while the professor is speaking – I doze off now and then during class.

Vocabulário
I don’t get much sleep on school days = não durmo muito nos dias que tenho aula, durante a semana
I fall asleep = eu pego no sono, adormeço
except when = a não ser, exceto quando
assignment = um trabalho ou tarefa de casa passado pelo professor
heavy sleeper = pessoa que tem sono pesado
kinda noisy = meio barulhenta/o
roommate = pessoa que divide o apartamento com ele (literalmente: que divide o quarto, mas usa-se para apartamento também)
otherwise I’ll just turn it off = se não, eu simplesmente desligo (o alarme)
go back to sleep = volto a dormir
oversleep = durmo demais da conta
make it to class on time = chegar na aula na hora (marcada).
take naps = tiro soneca
stay awake = ficar acordado
doze off = pegar no sono de leve sem ter a intenção
now and then = vez ou outra

Global Warming

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes, "most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations," which leads to warming of the surface and lower atmosphere by increasing the greenhouse effect. Natural phenomena such as solar variation combined with volcanoes have probably had a small warming effect from pre-industrial times to 1950, but a cooling effect since 1950. The basic conclusions have been endorsed by at least 30 scientific societies and academies of science, including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries. The American Association of Petroleum Geologists is the only scientific society that rejects these conclusions, and a few individual scientists also disagree with parts of them.
Remaining scientific uncertainties include the exact degree of climate change expected in the future, and how changes will vary from region to region around the globe. There is ongoing political and public debate regarding what, if any, action should be taken to reduce or reverse future warming or to adapt to its expected consequences. Most national governments have signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol aimed at combating greenhouse gas emissions.

There Wasn´t Time

Time. It seems heavy for the bored, escapes from the busy, flies by for the young and runs out for the aged. Time. We beg for it. We curse it. We kill it. Is it a friend? Or an enemy? We know very little about it. To know it all, perhaps we should view it through our memories.
When I was young, my mother was going to read me a story. But she had to wax the bathroom, and there wasn´t time. When I was young, Daddy was going to come to school and watch me in a play, but he was having his car tuned and there was no time. And still now, as an adult and a mother, I do not know when there will be time.

TRADUÇÃO

Não houve tempo

Tempo.
